Mix Literário gets to its second edition in a year of fight against censorship on books produced by LGBTQI+ authors in Brazil. Regarding this context, there are some news. This year, we’ll occupy an important space for the literary events circuit: Mário de Andrade Library. Taking advantage of the occasion to highlight Mário’s homosexuality, often neglected within the academy. We’ll also be honouring Vange Leonel, fundamental figure in the development and visibility of a national lesbian art movement. Other important innovation is the opening of our programming to non-fictional books, literary journalism and comics, editorial segments each time more relevant. Finally, we’re proud to announce the first Mix Literário Award, awarded to the year’s best author, during the general awarding ceremony of the festival. Thereby, we expect Mix Literário to become even broader, and turn into a tool of resistance for our community in such dark times.

Featuring Marcelino Freire, Cristina Judar e Agnaldo de Assis Nascimento
NOV 17 – 7pm @ Biblioteca Mário de Andrade
Literature made by LGBTQI+ people has been tracing a new urban geography, revealing its places of discard, ins and outs. The tracks that subvert the daily body. These characters are often in the night and experience a suspicious and dreamlike existence, in which identities are diffuse and smoky. Beyond the presence of Marcelino Freire, whose largely accoladed body of work always brings this scenery, we’ll be talking to authors Cristina Judar, whose recent romance Oito do Sete (winner of Prêmio São Paulo de Literatura) explores similar cartographies, and Agnaldo de Assis Nascimento, who just released his debut Horses, an epic of punk art of sorts, with hints of queer, winner of the first debuting authors publishing contest from São Paulo’s Secretariat of Culture.

Literature made by LGBTQI+ people isn’t of a single style or language. Nor is it only aimed at their own community. The authors in this table are striking examples of how a writer may transit between classic literary genres, inserting new elements such as Brazilianity, diversity, specific existential and historical issues. In this conversation are gathered: Cidinha da Silva, who explores many genres from poetry to fantasy; Jarid Arraes, who went from cordel to a tale in her recent Redemoinho em dia quente (Whirlpool in a hot day); Samir Machado de Machado, who explores classic adventure genders featuring queer characters; and Santiago Nazarian, who’s been exploring horror in his bizarre existentialism
narratives.
